Every teacher has a very full plate with the increasingly complex task of educating Iowa youth. Resources for education shrink each year, and yet the need for outdoor education, student engagement, academic achievement and a safe environment keep on growing. Last year we began an incentive program to encourage conservation, preservation and service into Iowa classrooms and afterschool programs. We awarded seven Beautiful Iowa School Awards around central and northern Iowa.
The awards are available again this year. We hope to have applications from a wider geographic area. Apply today for the Beautiful Iowa School Award. We hope it will help you get started on a service learning program either during and outside the school day. The Award is available to schools and organizations that implement Clean & Green and/or service-learning programs. There are four levels of involvement and effort by a classroom, group or school. They are, in order of increasing value:
- A banner, sign and stickers designating the district, school, classroom or program as a Beautiful Iowa School (</=$50)
- Material resources needed to implement service-learning programs (</=$100)
- Monetary grants to obtain related resources based on level of participation (</=$200)
- Monetary grants for youth-planned service-learning projects (</=$400)
