Core Concepts

"Through worms, we got students more excited about composting and inspired responsibility on caring for their new class pets. This also facilitated the second part of the project, where students separated lunch waste based on what is good/bad for worms. This project helped value our gardening program, by showing we can make curricular connections while improving the community through lessons on sustainability. We even had an article on the local newspaper!"

- Abbie Sawyer, Teacher, Sawyer Elementary School

How can you bring hands-on learning experiences into your classroom and still address the essential concepts and skills of the Core? Where can you find ways to address the Core emphasis on solving real life problems? What can you do to teach kids the 21st Century Skills they’ll need to be productive in the future?

Welcome to the Keep Iowa Beautiful educational program. It includes both Clean and Green for Kindergarten through 5th graders and service-learning resources for 6th through 12th grades.

We hope the 120 lessons in Clean and Green will help you enrich your classroom or after school program. Clean and Green brings concepts and skills from the Iowa Core and the Common Core Standards together with engaging subject matter and activities. Those concepts and skills form the top axis of the Clean and Green matrix.

Here are the concepts and skills that we focused on as we developed this educational program. You can find them below, organized by grade and subject matter for Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Grades, Middle School (6th-8th Grades) and High School (9-12th Grades).
